Salt marshes are unique environments, typical of transitional areas such as the Lagoon: low islets covered with herbaceous vegetation, periodically submerged by high tides. These environments are of great scenic value, precious for their biodiversity, with special plants able to withstand fluctuations in salinity, temperature and tides, and numerous rare birds. They are also natural filters, capable of improving water quality and retaining sediments and nutrients. However, these environments are at risk due to erosion, wave motion, reduced sediment input, climate change and, last but not least, pollution. Maintaining plant biodiversity in salt marshes is very important as it ensures a consolidating plant presence in all conditions.
Experts that discussed the topic: Elisa Scalabrin, Fabiana Corami, Beatrice Rosso (researchers at CNR-ISP Venice National Research Council and Institute of Polar Science) and Jane da Mosto (founder of We are here Venice). The event was introduced by Luciana Favaro di EuCliPA.it - Association of Italian Ambassadors of the European Climate Pact and Francesca Vianello, head of Europe Direct Venice Veneto of the Municipality of Venice.
The cycle of meetings ‘The Green Deal is us’ was organised by Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice, EuCliPA.it - Association of Italian Ambassadors of the European Climate Pact, CNR-ISP Venice (National Research Council and Institute of Polar Science), CNR-ISMAR (Istituto di Scienze Marine del CNR) and DVRI - Distretto Veneziano Ricerca e Innovazione and i We are here Venice for a total of three meetings between May and September 2025 on climate change and the need for a radical transformation of lifestyles, economy and society.
Association EuCliPA.it was born in 2022 from the experience of the informal community of Italian ambassadors of the European Climate Pact: following the values of the Pact, is committed to spreading knowledge and awareness about the climate and ecological crisis, starting from local communities, to reach as wide and diverse a public as possible at national level. It also implements initiatives and projects that contribute to addressing the effects of climate change, thanks to the knowledge, passion and commitment of its members, in the belief that "Every little action together can make a difference'.
