#SOTEU

On Wednesday 13 September 2023 from 9 AM to 12 AM, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen delivered the traditional SOTEU State of the Union Address live streaming with simultaneous translation into all 24 official languages of the European Union.
 
Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice organised for the occasion the vision of SOTEU 2023 followed by a public debate.
The public event was organised in collaboration with the Venetian sections of GFE European Federalist Youth and MFE European Federalist Movement.
 
The meeting took place from 8.30 AM to 1 PM at the Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice in Via Spalti 28, Mestre - Venice. Admission was free of charge by reservation while places were available.
To make the reservation, it was necessary to:
- call the toll-free number: 800 496200 (also free for mobile phones) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 AM to 1 PM.
- send an e-mail to infoeuropa@comune.venezia.it (specifying name, telephone number and number of people).
 
As usual in our traditional Caffè Europa meetings, breakfast and some official EU publications were offered.

The State of the Union Address is an annual event during which the President of the European Commission makes an alysis of EU actions and broadly presents the objectives for the following year. The speech is delivered in September before the plenary session of the European Parliament. For the European Parliament, the State of the European Union debate is the key debate of the year: a time for reviewing the Commission's work to deliver what it has planned, in order to provide solutions for European citizens.

SOTEU 2022 in a nutshell: 
 
In her State of the Union Address on 14 September 2022, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined the flagship initiatives the Commission intends to undertake in the coming year. Many of them are implemented in response to the recommendations made by citizens through the Conference on the Future of Europe.
 

The initiatives include:

  • Continue to strongly support Ukraine and its people, including by mobilising all the power of the EU single market
  • Putting measures in place to help Europeans overcoming the energy crisis
  • Supporting the business environment, in particular small and medium-sized enterprises, to strengthen Europe's future competitiveness
  • Reducing the EU's dependence on Russian fossil fuels and working closely with reliable suppliers
  • Investing further in renewable energy and in particular hydrogen
  • A global leader in climate adaptation and the protection of our nature
  • Continuing to defend democracy, at home and around the world, and the state of law
