28.09.2018 Venetonight - The European Researchers' Night 2018

Since 2005 the European Researchers' Night is an initiative promoted by the European Commission during which researchers make the date to meet the general public in different European cities and on the same day at the end of summer, the fourth Friday of September.

The European Researchers' Night is an opportunity to get the audiance of all ages in touch with the research world, but in a fanny way, to open a space for meeting and dialogue with citizens and to make young people aware of the scientific career.

On 28 September 2018, in different European cities, citizens have the opportunity to visit research buildings that usually are not open to the public, use the latest technologies with the guidance of researchers, participate in experiments, competitions, demonstrations and simulations , exchange ideas and party with researchers.

"For one night, anyone can be a scientist"

At VENETONIGHT you can expect events, shows, experiments, workshops, activities for children, itineraries and guided tours! The VENETONIGHT partners of the European Researchers' Night in Padua, Venice and Verona are:

Università di Padova
Università Ca' Foscari Venezia
Università di Verona
Europe Direct del Comune di Venezia

After the first edition in 2010, organized in Venice by the Universities Ca 'Foscari and Iuav (with the participation of Fondazione Enrico Mattei, City of Venice and Unioncamere Veneto), starting from 2011 the Researchers' Night was organized as an initiative with a regional scope, in which take place also the National Research Council (CNR), the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Council for Research and Experimentation in Agriculture (CRA), the Advanced Biomedical Research Foundation (VIMM). From the 2018 edition, Venetonight sees important innovations. The traditional evening of meeting and exchange between researchers and the Venetian population is extended to an entire week, thus opening the doors to primary classes of elementary and secondary schools.

In addition Venice introduces in 2018 a transversal theme that will enlighta spects of research that they do not reveal themselves to the senses but that are equally significant and with a strong impact on our lives, on society and on the planet. The chosen fil rouge is the INVISIBILE, a challenging theme for the researchers of the Ca 'Foscari and DVRI - the Venetian District of Innovation and Research - which take part in the event showing how the invisible becomes visible in science, in art, literature and culture.

The activities presented investigate some crucial aspects of Ca' Foscari's Global Challenges, made up of interdisciplinary teams that carry out cutting-edge research to face present and future global challenges. Venetonight will address climate change, inter and multicultural relationships, accessibility rights for the disabled, preservation of cultural heritage, complex systems and many other points of consideration for all citizens. The public will be involved in an active and participatory way, accompanied by visits to the installations by cultural mediators and by the Young Voices, the students ambassadors of Science Gallery Venice.

Europe Direct in Venice contributes to the event by organizing an interactive kid's corner with information about the European Union. Children can experience the European dimension by playing and watching cartoons and videos about Europe (Friday 28 September 17-21, Saturday 29 September 10-13).

The activities encouraged by the researchers of the promoting institutions and universities are free and open to all citizens.
