The Representation in Italy of the European Commission participated in the 2020 edition of Giro d'Italia, which was held from 3 to 25 October, to enhance the sense of Europe in our territories and to inform and raise awareness among citizens and sport fans on European policies dedicated to environment, sport, health, sustainable mobility and food safety.

From Caltanissetta to Milan, twenty days, twenty stages with pedal assisted bicycles: the European Commission renewed its partnership with the 103rd Giro d'Italia edition playing a protagonist role in Giro-E with the European "Next Generation" jersey, in order to discover or rediscover Europe on our territory.

From the start, on Sunday October 4, in Caltanissetta, to the arrival, on Sunday October 25, in Milan, Giro-E allowed professionals, amateurs and testimonials to ride alongside the main tour "Corsa Rosa", promoting the interventions inspired by the European Green Deal for a sustainable, fair and inclusive future.

The electric bike represents a valid mobility alternative in our cities. It makes pedaling easier and increases the opportunities of using it for anyone, anywhere. This is why the Giro-E and the European Green Deal form a great tandem. The bicycle helps fight climate change and ensures a healthier and greener society for future generations, ”says Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President of the European Commission.

Every day, on the initiative of the European Commission, the best youngest rider was awarded with the European Next Generation Jersey, to celebrate together the extraordinary recovery plan dedicated to future generations, wanted by the European Union.

An eye to the future without forgetting the present: in the last seven years Italy has benefited from almost one hundred billion euros of European funds implemented in projects dedicated to regional development, environment, agriculture, culture and much more. Along the Giro tour, many realities take part in the initiative. The Nelson Castle in Bronte, the laboratories for digital growth in Rimini, research projects on COVID-19, the cross-border cycle paths of Friuli, research and innovation projects, archaeological and natural parks, dozens of Italian PDO and DOC products, investments to support small and medium-sized enterprises are a few of them.

With new methods and in compliance with the distancing rules in force, the 2020 edition of this competition presents itself as the ideal opportunity to share the European message: together we are stronger.

The "UEalGiro-E" project, conceived and promoted by the Representation of the European Commission in Milan, actively involved local communities through the "Europe Direct" information network and the European Documentation Centers operating in Italy.
