SYNOPSIS
Everything Is Illuminated (2005), based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, tells the story of Jonathan, a young American Jew who travels to Ukraine in search of his family roots. He wants to find out what happened to his grandfather, who was saved during the Second World War by a mysterious woman. Accompanying him are Alex, a talkative and naive Ukrainian guide, Alex's grandfather and a woman who acts as a translator. What begins as an often comical and surreal journey gradually turns into a deeper and more painful journey, in which traces of the Holocaust and the wounds left by history emerge. The film alternates between irony and drama, showing how memory, even when difficult to face, is fundamental to understanding oneself and making sense of the present.
