Also this year the Giro d'Italia is tinged with Europe.

From Sicily to Milan, the trip green by electric bike through the projects supported by the EU and the European jersey "Next Generation".
The Representation of the European Commission in Italy participates in the 2021 edition of the Giro held from 8 to 30 May 2021, to enhance the value of Europe in our territories and to inform and raise awareness among citizens and sports enthusiasts of European policies dedicated to the environment, sport, health, sustainable mobility and food safety.

Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice collaborates with the Province of Padua and the Province of Treviso, partners of the Veneto sub-network of Europe Direct Venezia Veneto.

From the start Saturday, May 8 in Turin, to the arrival Sunday, May 30 in Milan, Europe returns to the Giro d'Italia. Also for the 104 edition, the European Commission remains an institutional partner of RCS for the great cycling event. Environment, culture and sport will meet along the way, embracing hundreds of projects developed, protected and enhanced by European Union funding: from the Egyptian Museum of Turin, restored with EU funds, to the CINECA Supercomputer in Bologna, that is developing new medicines thanks to artificial intelligence, up to the buildings rebuilt after the earthquake in L'Aquila and the realization of ultra-broadband in Puglia.

"At this time of departure from the pandemic emergency, while preparing the extraordinary interventions of the Next Generation EU, the stages of the Giro d'Italia will show the Europe that is already on our territory: scientific laboratories, industrial and archaeological parks, cultural and natural sites, protected trademarks, business networks, schools, urban centres, cycle paths and much more. Along the peninsula, the European Union is ideally cycling with cyclists to promote economic recovery, the fight against climate change and a greener and inclusive future," says Massimo Gaudina, head of the European Commission’s Representation in Milan

An eye to the future without forgetting the present: in the last seven years, Italy has benefited from almost one hundred billion euros of European funds for projects dedicated to regional development, environment, agriculture, culture and much more. Along the route of the Giro you will be able to meet some of the thousands of these realities: from Nelson Castle in Bronte to digital growth laboratories in Rimini, from research projects on COVID-19 up to cross-border bike routes in Friuli, just to name a few. There are research and innovation projects, archaeological and natural parks, dozens of Italian PDO and DOC products, investments to support small and medium-sized enterprises.

With new methods and in compliance with the rules of distance in force, the 2021 edition of this competition presents itself as the ideal occasion to share the message of Europe: together we are stronger.

The project "Uealgiro-E" conceived and promoted by the Representation of the European Commission in Milan, actively involves local communities through the information network "Europe Direct" and that of the European Documentation Centres operating in Italy.
