02.04.2026 Webinar "Lessons of Europe 2026" - Lesson 2 "Difficult times: the European Union and its defence"

On Thursday, 2 April 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30, the second webinar in the ‘Lessons from Europe’ series will be held, titled "Difficult times: the European Union and its defence".

The lesson will be coordinated by Annalisa Michetti, Europe Direct Chieti, with contributions from Professor Luca Paladini, University for Foreigners of Siena, and Professor Federico Niglia, University for Foreigners of Perugia.

The topic analysed in this lesson is the strengthening of the European Union's defence, which has been on the agenda of the EU institutions and the main governments of its Member States for some time now. The invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022 brought this issue to the forefront. Further acceleration was brought about by growing uncertainties in transatlantic relations.
For this reason, on 4 March 2025, the European Commission presented ReArm Europe, or Readiness 2030, a plan that aims to increase the EU's military capabilities. The rearmament of the Federal Republic of Germany should also be considered in this context. Announced by Olaf Scholz in the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine, this process was recently confirmed by the current Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The meeting will be held online from 10:00 to 11:30 and is free and open to all citizens, university and secondary school students, and journalists.
