07.05.2026 Webinar "Lessons of Europe 2026" - Lesson 7 "The European Union and the green transition: where are we now?"

On Thursday, 7 May 2026, from 10.00 am to 11.30 am, the seventh webinar in the "Lessons of Europe" series will take place, titled "The European Union and the green transition: where are we now?". ==> This event is part of the 2026 Europe Day celebrations in Venice.

The lecture is opened and coordinated by Massimiliano MontiniScientific Coordinator for Europe Direct at the University of Siena, with contributions from Giacomo Grassi, European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JCR) (Ispra, VA) and Fabio Ferraro, Professor of European Union Law, University of Napoli Federico II.

The green transition is no longer just a promise: it is a process already underway that is reshaping Europe. This webinar takes a broad view – from the scientific evidence on climate change to the major international strategies designed to implement the Paris Agreement – to get to the heart of European policies. We will analyse the concrete results of the Green Deal, particularly in terms of emissions reduction and the transformation of key economic sectors. However, in recent years, the Draghi Report and the ‘Omnibus’ packages have reignited the debate on a crucial issue: is it possible to reconcile environmental sustainability with economic competitiveness? With contributions from experts in the scientific and legal fields, the webinar explores the current state of play regarding this delicate balance. Whilst there is talk of simplification and economic growth on the one hand, on the other there is a risk of a potential scaling back of environmental targets. A fundamental question remains unanswered: will Europe manage to maintain its global leadership in sustainability without losing economic and strategic momentum? A timely, practical and essential reflection for understanding the future that lies ahead.

The meeting will be held online from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and is free and open to all citizens, university and secondary school students, and journalists.
