09.05.2025 - European Bench in Chioggia

On Friday 9 May at 10.00 am the City of Chioggia celebrated Europe Day at the "La Divina Eleonora Duse" park, Viale Cicogna in Sottomarina di Chioggia in the presence of the city authorities, first and foremost Mauro Armelao, Mayor of Chioggia (partner of the Veneto network Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice), the European Federalist Youth of Venice, the European Federalist Movement of Venice and the citizens.

During Europe Day, the City of Chioggia in collaboration with Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice inaugurated the European Bench in Chioggia, at the "La Divina Eleonora Duse" park in Sottomarina di Chioggia, a green space for citizens and especially young people, to celebrate the values of the European Union and to bring its symbols to Italian cities through a territorial redevelopment operation and citizen involvement on European issues.

The symbol of the European flag was placed on the bench painted in blue and the writing "EU: Peace and Union between nations" was reported, the result of the selection that involved the city schools. The phrase was in fact proposed by the students of class 2A of Nicolò de Conti and revealed to the public by the students themselves.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the European bench, the plaque naming the Park after the Divine Eleonora Duse was also placed and the Bookcrossing House was inaugurated, created and donated by Massimo Vianello with readings by the Università Popolare and the Gruppo Poeti Città di Chioggia.

The initiative was launched in the summer of 2021 by the “European Benches in Every City” committee, which achieved the creation of around 150 benches throughout Italy. The project is free because it is financed by the fundraiser, which has the name of the committee itself, created on GoFundMe by a group of volunteers from the European Federalist Youth of Lecco following the defacement with neo-Nazi symbols of a European bench created in their city. In 2023, the “European Benches in Every City” initiative also materialized in the City of Venice with “The European Bench in Venice” curated by Europe Direct Venezia Veneto of the Municipality of Venice. The European bench was installed at the Albanese Park in Mestre-Venice with the colors of the European flag and the written phrase: “A free and united Europe is a necessary premise for the strengthening of modern civilization”, Manifesto of Ventotene 1941.

This event was also mentioned in the Chioggia Notizie.it article "Nasce il parco Eleonora Duse" and in the press release of the City of Chioggia "Europe Day, in Chioggia many initiatives for the city".
