09.04.2026 Webinar "Lessons of Europe 2026" - Lesson 3 "Non-negotiable values: the European Union, democracy and the rule of law"

On Thursday, 9 April 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30, the third webinar in the “Lessons of Europe” series will be held, titled "Non-negotiable values: the European Union, democracy and the rule of law".

The lecture is coordinated by Marta Ferrantelli, Europe Direct Trapani Sicilia, with contributions from Federico Castiglioni, Istituto Affari Internazionali, and Claudio Di Maio, Roma Tre University.

The European Union is not just a market, nor can it be reduced to the single currency. European integration has always been based on values and principles enshrined in Article 2 of its treaty: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including those of minorities. These values aim to promote a society based on inclusion, tolerance, justice and non-discrimination. For this reason, they are non-negotiable. However, they are increasingly being called into question, both outside the EU and sometimes even within its borders. Countering this trend, as the speakers at this edition of “Lessons of Europe” will show, is a commitment that the EU cannot and will not shirk.

The meeting will be held online from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and is free and open to all citizens, university and secondary school students, and journalists.
