25.11.2018 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. A date chosen not by chance: on the same day of 1960, the three Mirabal sisters, political activists of the Dominican Republic, were killed. It is an important date, to remind everyone that respect is the basis of every relationship and that we can not continue to see the number of women suffering violence increase. The World Day against Violence against Women, for the first time, was instituted on December 17, 1999 by the UN General Assembly. Since then, it represents the most important moment of the year to talk, inform and raise awareness about this serious problem. Which affects all the countries of the world.

Violence against women has many faces; crimes such as physical violence, sexual violence, rape, and psychological violence. In Italy and in the world, on average, one in three women aged 15 and above suffer violence . The fear of violence is confirmed by the data according to which 53% of women throughout the European Union say they avoid certain places or situations for fear of being attacked. An act of violence against women can happen anywhere: inside the home, at work, on the street. It is often the partners or the ex-partners who commit the most serious acts: in Italy they are, in fact, responsible for 62.7% of the rapes. A long trail of violence that can culminate with the extreme consequence: femicide. In 38% of cases of murders of women, the resposible is, once again, the partner.

Europe Direct on this occasion adhered to "Novembre Donna", an initiative roposed by the Municipal Administration of collateral events to celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. These events help to promote respect for human rights in order to FREE WOMEN FROM VIOLENCE.
