Registry, Vital and Electoral Status

Vital status

A Civil Registry Office is established in each municipality with the task of keeping citizenship, birth, marriage and death registers.
In the municipality of Venice, the Civil Registry Office was established in 1871.
The Civil Status Ordinance stipulates that vital status registers must be kept in each municipality, on the basis of which civil registrars must issue the extracts and certificates requested of them.
The acts in question shall be evidence, up to suit of perjury, of what the mayor and the city clerk so delegated certifies to have taken place in his or her presence or performed by him or her.
Civil status registers are public in the sense that the public may obtain certificates and extracts, but persons outside the office are not allowed to consult them.

Registry

The Civil Registry Office documents the position of resident members of the public, whether Italian or foreign, and records their movements. It keeps track of all changes occurring in the municipality due to natural or civil causes, i.e. birth, marriage, death, emigration, immigration, and issues the relevant certificates.
Registry data are public, but only through the issuing of certificates, meaning that it is not possible to consult civil registers.

Electoral

The electoral office maintains and updates the lists of voters in the City of Venice.
It issues voter cards to members of the public.
It ensures the updating of the registers of polling station presiding officers and scrutineers and of Lay Judges of the Court of Assizes and Court of Appeal.
It ensures the formation of conscription lists and the updating of serial rolls.
