On Wednesday 15 September 2021 at 9 AM, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen delivered her second State of the Union address.

The State of the Union Address is an annual event during which the President of the European Commission makes an analysis of EU actions and broadly presents the objectives for the following year. The speech is delivered in September before the plenary session of the European Parliament.
For the European Parliament, the State of the European Union debate is the key debate of the year: a time for reviewing the Commission's work to deliver what it has planned, in order to provide solutions for European citizens.

Setting the course for the coming year

In her State of the Union address on 15 September 2021, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined the main initiatives the Commission intends to undertake in the coming year, including: 

  • continue vaccination efforts in Europe and accelerate the vaccination campaign worldwide, as well as strengthen pandemic preparedness
  • trying to fill the climate finance gap, together with global partners
  • drive digital transformation, which will create jobs and boost competitiveness, while ensuring technical excellence and security of supply
  • ensure fairer working conditions and better health care and enable young Europeans to benefit more from the EU's social market economy
  • intensify our security and defence cooperation and deepen the EU's relations with close allies
  • defend European values and freedoms and protect the state of law
