There will soon be a fourth Bridge crossing the Grand Canal in Venice: the Mayor of Venice, Massimo Cacciari, together with the Deputy Mayor for Public Works, Mara Rumiz, made this announcement during a press conference held at the Venice City Hall.
The Bridge, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, clearly shows that Venice wants to become a model for contemporary architecture and art: from now on, the town will not only look back to ist gloriuos past, but also look towards the future.
The two bridge shoulders - each of which is 15 mt long and weighs 100 tonns - will be transported to town from the dockyard on the mainland where it was built on the night between the 27th and 28th July and put up during the following two days, 28th and 19th July. The central arch - which is 60 mt long and weighs 270 tonns - will arrive during the night bewteen 7th and 8th August and be placed between 11th and 12th August.
In order to reduce inconvenience as much as possible, the works will take place mostly at night and on weekends and a special communication campaign will be launched to inform citizens and visitors about the alternative circulation plan set by the City of Venice together with Actv (Venice public transport company).
