Venice map: Veneto Region and the City of Venice

Venice, the capital of Venezia province and of the Veneto Region in north-eastern Italy, lies on the Gulf of Venice at the north end of the Adriatic Sea. The political boundaries of the city were expanded in 1927 to include a mainland area around the Lagoon of Venice as well as the 118 small islands within the lagoon that comprise historic Venice.

Population's size: 269.000
Area: 41.317 Ha

Map of the City of Venice

Main socio-economic characteristics
Although tourism remains Venice's most important business, the modern city has encompassed a newer, industrialised sector on the mainland, including Mestre and Marghera, the latter Venice's commercial port. Shipyards, petroleum refineries and chemical and metallurgical industries contribute to the city's economy. Burano lace and venetian glass are world-renowned. The Lido Beach, on one of the seaward islands of the lagoon, is a famous bathing resort.

Main problems
Environmental problems concerning air, water and acoustic pollution, increased production of waste due to the high presence of tourism, traffic, public housing, unemployment, moving of residents from the city centre to the mainland.

Policy
In Venice, both the centro storico and the city as a whole are suffering the simultaneous decline of population and jobs. The increased presence of non-residents (temporary workers, students and tourists) only partly offsets this ongoing process.
There is general acceptance that the "Venice problem" can be solved only if the questions of "development" (the active survival of Venice as a community) are given the same priority as those of "safeguarding" (the physical defence and the environmental rehabilitation of the lagoon and the conservation of the historical and artistic heritage of the city). In no other way can we guarantee to future generations the continuing cultural experience of Venice.

Strategic Plan
The City of Venice adopted a Strategic Plan, which you can download here.
