THE BULLETIN OF THE TIDE IN VENICE

Download the Bulletin (pubblication time: 10 a.m., 2  p.m. and 6 p. m.)

Since February 2010, ICPSM makes available a new product: "Bulletin of the tide in Venice".

WHAT IS IT?
It's a new for making public information about the forecast of the tide in the city of Venice.

The Bulletin consists of three main areas:
a. the graph of the tide;
b. explanatory notes on the tide;
c. weather condition.

 a. The graph of the tide
The graph shows two curves: the astronomicl tide (red light stroke) and the forecasted tide (blu marked stroke).
- The astronomical tide curve shows the tide values raised only by the gravitational interaction between Earth and heavenly bodies, mainly the sun and moon, using methods of harmonic analysis. These methods allow calculation of the tide at a certain place, as a superposition of sinusoidal oscillations characterized by its amplitude and phase.
- The forecasted tide curve, shows the values obtained by adding to the astronomical tide the component due to the meteorological factors and the particular morphology of the Adriatic basin. This is the curve that gives the tide values that ICPSM expect to see in Venice.
At each update it's issued a forecast for the next 3 days, following the issuing time of the bulletin.

 b. Explanatory notes on the tide
The second section is designed to provide an interpretation of the tide chart for users of all levels of knoledge of the phenomenon: from the expert Venetian (Significant extremals), to the tourist who wants to understand if he can be quietly exploring the city (Codice colore).
Sequence:
- "Significant extremals" is a table where data, time and value of any first three tide extremals being out of normali range are given.
- "Notes" field is the information borrowed from the automatic answering machine that Venetians are familiar with. In this field auxiliary informatio can be found. For example, information about the suspension of the walkways service or about the presence of Bora wind that Venetians know to be cause of significant level differences between one part of the lagoon and the other.
- "Color code" is an informational field directed expecially to those who are not familiar with the high water phenomenon and the morphological structure of the city, and who need a quick-read information about the practicabilyt of the city and any difficult situation they may go through.

 c. Weather conditions
This third and final section is to provide a visual, in a sense, preparatory to the prediction of tide, to inform the reader on the synoptic weather conditions, which may have led ICPSM forecasters to produe plotted data.
The informations that you want to get to the player are three: how is the synoptic situation now, how baric structure will evolve in the coming hours, how to interpret this information. So it was decided to give:
- an EUMETSAT meteosat infrared image processed by ICPSM in agreement with EUMETSAT;
- a map of baric estimatesproduced by KNMI (Koninklijk Nederland Meteorologisch Institut);
- some notes on general situation given by the CMT (Centro Meteorologico di Teolo dell'ARPA Veneto).
This is due to the collaboration that ICPSM started some years ago with different operational centers in Europe.

HOW TO GET IT
The Bulletin is provided free of charge in *.pdf format at www.comune.venezia.it/maree.
After the experimental phase, it will be possible after registration, to receive it comfortably to your email address.

WHEN IT IS PUBLISHED
The Bulletin is updated whenever the ICPSM Operational Room issues a new forecast. Under normal circumstances this is from Monday to Friday at 9.30, 13.00 and 17.00. On Saturday at 9.30 and 12.30. Whenever the weather and sea conditions so require, the Operational Room is manned through the event with coverage 24 hours 24, if necessary, with continuos updating of the forecast.
