"Acqua alta" (high water or tide) is a phenomenon which generally takes place in Venice in winter time, when a combination of astronomical tide and atmospheric conditions cause a larger inflow of water into the Venetian Lagoon. When this happens, the lowest areas of the city are flooded. These floods are generally limited to a few inches of water and don't last all day. Even during "acqua alta" peak hours, locals can carry on normal living and tourists can still enjoy the city, so long as they wear waterproof boots. Besides, raised wooden walkways are put in place, which allow people to cross the submerged areas.

The Atlas of the Lagoon is the result of interdisciplinary work by a scientific team involving many specialists working in universities and organisations which study the Venice Lagoon. It was created with the aim of disseminating knowledge about the lagoon's ecosystem among researchers, professionals, citizens and tourists.
The 103 maps available online (divided into 5 different sections: Geosphere, Biosphere, Anthroposphere, Protected Environments, Integrated Analyses) can be consulted trough webGIS, a web tool which allows users to search areas of interest and to print and download them directly from the Internet, with no need of any software to be installed.
