Certificates, extracts, copies

Pursuant to Art. 74(2)(a) of Presidential Decree No. 445/2000, in dealings with government bodies, public service providers and private individuals, certificates are always replaced by declarations in lieu of certification or affidavits, for which see the forms below:

The certificates that can be issued are:

  • certificate/extract/copy of full birth certificate

  • certificate/extract/copy of full marriage certificate/publication of banns/special proxy/wedding ceremony in another municipality

  • certificate/extract/copy of full death certificate

For whom is it intended?

to anyone who requests it, subject to legal restrictions

 

What to do

Make an application to the Civil Registry Office by filling in the following forms:

The application, together with a copy of the identity document or power of attorney, must be submitted:

Full certificates/extracts/copies can be issued as follows:

  • collected directly at the counter

- extracts of birth certificates complete with personal particulars are issued exclusively to the persons concerned, but may also be collected by third parties provided that they have a proxy from the person concerned and a copy of their own identity document;

- full copies of the documents, upon written request, subject to the limitations provided for by law, may only be issued to the persons concerned or to those who have a legally relevant interest.

  • sent to the applicant only against cover of postal costs and in the manner specified below:

- post in Italy: transmission to the Civil Registry Archives of a self-addressed stamped envelope or collection by express courier service;

- post abroad: collection of the document at the Civil Registry Archives by express courier service;

  • sent by e-mail: at the request of the interested parties if digitally signed

 

Digitised birth, marriage, civil partnership or death certificates and abstracts can be requested independently by the public in possession of a digital identity (SPID - Sistema Pubblico di identità Digitale), electronic identity card or national services card by accessing the DIME platform:

birth certificate from 1 January 1964

abstract of the birth certificate from 1 January 1964

marriage certificate from 1 January 1978

abstract of marriage certificate from 1 January 1978

death certificate from 21 November 1996

abstract of death certificate from 21 November 1996

extract of civil union

 

How much does it cost?
All certificates/extracts/full copies of vital records are free of charge.

Quality standards

Time interval between the registration of the request and the issue of the certificate/extract or copy at the counter: <= 10 days 

(immediate if online).
